Jaguar Mite #2 falls to St. Jude Knights #2 on late goal

It was a game of good, old-fashioned defensive hockey.
But, on this Sunday evening, Oct. 9, on Inwood Ice, it was only the St. Jude Knights #2 team that managed to penetrate the defense and score, topping the Jaguar Mite #2 team 1-0. The loss dropped the Jaguars to 2-2 in seeding round play within the Blue Tier of the Silver Division of the Northern Illinois Hockey League.
The game’s only tally came with just 1:27 to play in the third period, when St. Jude’s Whalen managed to get behind the defense and fire a shot into the upper corner of the net, past a perfectly positioned Luke Brzezinski. The Jaguar’s goalie stopped all 10 other shots he faced on the night, extending to three straight his streak of games in which he has allowed one goal or fewer.
The strong play in goal by Brzezinski was matched by the Knights’ goalie, who turned back 11 shots from the Jaguars, including a flurry of seven shots in the second stanza. Play throughout the game was fast paced, with each team having opportunities that were frequently turned aside by strong defensive play from the opposition.
The closeness of the game was predictable when looking at the two teams on paper. Both were 2-1 through their first three seeding round games, playing the same teams to the same outcomes. Both the Jaguars and Knights fell in their openers to Vikings #2 before posting wins over Peoria #1 and Huskies #2.
The Jaguar Mite #2 squad has two seeding-round games remaining. They will travel to Darien Thursday evening, Oct. 13, for a 6:30 p.m. game against Hawks #2, and then conclude the opening portion of their schedule with a 10:40 a.m. game on Saturday, Oct. 22, against Huskies #1 in Romeoville, at CanLan (the former International Ice Centre).
